Join She Moves Mountains for a magical weekend of yoga, mindfulness, and rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park!

Since the 1940’s, climbers have flocked to the otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree National Park. Thousands of routes for everyone from complete beginners to expert climbers can be found on the solid granite rock formations scattered throughout the park.

While Joshua Tree is known for its impeccable friction climbing, that’s not the only style in the area. Whether you’re looking for splitter cracks, funky face climbs, or adventure routes, this park has it all, at every level of difficulty. And the setting is hard to beat. Take in expansive views of the Mojave Desert or try to spot the elusive desert tortoise while relaxing between routes.

Sound like fun? Save your spot now, and join us for some unforgettable climbing and yoga in Joshua Tree!

What's Included & Not Included

Included:

  • All rock climbing gear.
  • Three 7-hour climbing sessions.
  • Afternoon yoga classes.
  • All meals, including Friday breakfast through Sunday lunch, and Thursday night snacks.
  • 3 nights of camping.

Not Included:

  • Entrance fees to the park. Price is per vehicle. We recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful Pass, which can be found here. The pass gives you one year of access to all National Parks, US Forest Service, and BLM.
  • Gratuities to guides. We recommend between 15-25% depending on your experience.
  • Trip protection. We will host this retreat rain or shine. If the weather is poor (it did snow on us one day last spring!), we will propose alternative activities such as technical skills lessons (anchor building, self-rescue, multi-pitch) or hiking.
  • Alcohol. We cannot legally provide alcoholic beverages in Joshua Tree National Park. You are welcome to bring your own to be consumed at the campsite after climbing.
Optional
  • Airport transfer - Only available to/from Palm Springs Airport. To choose this option, participants must arrive in Palm Springs on Thursday, prior to the retreat, and depart Sunday after the retreat. If this doesn't fit with your flight schedule, we recommend booking a taxi.
  • Camping equipment.
  • Transportation during the retreat - Because we will split up into small climbing groups and climb in different locations throughout the park, we cannot all ride together. We will help to arrange carpools. If needed we will rent a car and split the cost between participants not driving.
  • Additional day-of guided climbing. Please see our Hire a Guide page for pricing.
Cancellation & Trip Insurance

We have a very strict cancellation policy. We recommend purchasing trip protection to protect your investment.

Accommodations

We are super excited to host this season's retreats at The Joshua Tree Crash Pad, a climber-built camping area just 15 minutes from two of the park's entrances. This is a private property with a small house, multiple 120 sq foot cabins, and ample camp sites. The cabins and camping share outdoor toilets and showers as well as a sheltered outdoor communal space. If you are interested in further details or photos of the property and accommodations, please reach out!

Mindfulness & Yoga

Yoga is one of the most accessible ways to improve at rock climbing. It increases flexibility, builds strength, promotes balance, and helps calm the mind. We will be offering an hour and a half yoga class after climbing Friday and Saturday. All yoga instructors we partner with are familiar with climbing and will focus on a practice designed to restore and bring balance to the body after a full day on the rock.

Climbing

Throughout our Climbing & Yoga Retreat weekends, we cater our climbing and instruction services to fit all ability levels—from rookie to pro.

Our guides have been trained by AMGA or PCGI and are experts at finding routes that suit every guest's experience.

To make sure everyone gets the most out of their Joshua Tree climbing experience, the weekend’s sessions are divided into three different categories:

Intro - For first-time climbers.

Intermediate - For those who have some experience, but perhaps have never climbed outside (and are looking to climb in the 5.5-5.9 range).

Advanced - For those ready to take on more challenging routes with our guides.

Meals

We love to eat! And we love supporting local businesses. At each retreat we work with local restaurants to provide the best-tasting food the high desert has to offer. Some of our favorites include Middle Eastern food from Yucca Kabob and brick oven pizza from 2 Guys Pies. We’ll make sure you’re well fed with Yucca Valley’s best. And don’t worry, we can accommodate those with food restrictions. We provide a simple breakfast of bagels and cream cheese (GF and vegan options provided), eggs, gluten free granola and oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, and nuts. For lunch we will be making sandwiches and will provide a variety of snacks and bars.

let's go!

FAQs

1

Age & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to hike three miles over varied terrain while carrying a 15 lb backpack.
  • Ability to do 20 squats.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
2

Travel Information

  • We recommend flying into the Palm Springs airport, which is about 50 minutes from the campground where we’ll be staying. We will connect participants who are flying in so they can book airport transfers together.
  • Joshua Tree National Park is located about two and a half hours east of Los Angeles.
3

How many participants come by themselves?

The majority of women come to our clinics alone - somewhere around 95%.  If you are hesitating to join because you would be coming solo, please know that we expect a majority of our participants to be joining by themselves, seeking community.

4

I'm an advanced climber. Will I be able to lead climb?

Due to the nature of this event and climbing in the mountains, we do not allow participants to lead on this trip. As a company policy, we do not permit climbers to lead without a guide on a rope next to them which is not possible while we are in the mountains.

During our crag days will spend our time  focusing on learning and building multi-pitch skills and clients will not have the opportunity to lead climb.

5

What is the average age of the women who attend?

We generally have a wide range of ages at our retreats. The average tends to fall anywhere between the ages of 26 to 45. But we have had quite a few women in their 60's join as well. It really is up to the attitude and physical ability of the participant.

6

I've never climbed before, can I come?

ABSOLUTELY. We will have at least 4 instructors at the retreat so that we can accommodate a wide range of abilities. In fact, teaching people the basics of rock climbing is what we do best. The entire ethos of She Moves Mountains guiding is to remember what it felt like to try climbing for the first time. It's intimidating, but we will be with you ever step of the way.

7

What happens if it rains or the weather is poor?

Just like all backcountry activities, we work within a permit system. If needed, we will adjust the location of the event within the state. Changing location may also occur due to poor weather or air quality.

If poor weather will ruin your experience we suggest that you purchase "cancel for any reason" trip protection as we will not be providing any refunds due to weather related issues.

8

I am plus sized. Am I able to climb?

We aren't experts in this area as this is not the lived experience of our current instructor team. But we want you here and we are committed to making your experience a positive one.

If you can:
• Hike three miles over varied terrain while carrying a 15 lb backpack
• Do 20 squats
• Have good balance
• And maintain a positive attitude

CLIMBING IS FOR YOU!

Currently the most limiting factor is the ability to fit into a harness. We have harnesses that can accommodate up to a 56inch waist. We are looking into getting a fleet of fully adjustable harnesses before next season starts.

If you want to learn more from plus sized climbers I highly recommend looking into Climb Big. Climb Big is an organization with a mission to "Make climbing more accessible for fat folx."

9

Can people with food allergies join?

People with food allergies are absolutely welcome to join us at our program! We have food options that are vegan, gluten free, lactose free. Of course, if it would make you more comfortable, you are also welcome to pack your own meals.

10

Can I bring my pet?

We know you love your fur babies, but unfortunately we cannot allow pets on any of our group trips or clinics.

11

Are payment plans available?

Yes we have 2 types of payment options:

Please visit our Payment Plans page for more information.
