At the Introduction to Backpacking we spend two days and one night learning and practicing the skills needed to plan and execute your own backpacking trip.
With the help of our experienced instructors and access to all the necessary gear, our Intro to Backpacking clinic is the perfect opportunity to learn the essential skills and knowledge to go on your own safe and successful backpacking trips.
We'll meet you at the trailhead, where you'll receive any gear that you're borrowing and meet your instructor and group for the weekend.
Once you're geared up and ready to go, we'll hike into the beautiful wilderness, where you'll spend the next 24 hours learning important backcountry skills. At night we'll settle in our tents as we drift asleep to the sounds of nature.
In the morning, after enjoying breakfast and breaking down camp, we'll hike back to the trailhead. Along the way, your instructor will review some of the key takeaways from the weekend and answer any remaining questions you may have.
Over the weekend you will learn:

"I loved that I was able to learn the skills I need to backpack either on my own or with others. As a beginner it can be daunting to try and figure out what to do or what you need and maybe a little embarrassing with a group of well seasoned backpackers. I never felt this way during this venture and I came out on the other side feeling stronger and more confident and having made some really meaningful connections with great people.
Do it! Life is short, it’s absolutely worth taking the time to go and have a new adventure!
Jeni A. (Intro to Backpacking 2022)
"My favorite part was meeting others who are passionate about learning and being outdoors, feeling safe to be outdoors with new people.
If you're thinking about it- Do it! I have done two programs with SMM and both were incredible. I left feeling strong, confident and proud of myself. I was uplifted by the instructors/leaders and the attendees. Doing new interesting stuff, in beautiful places with cool people, what more can you ask for??"
Lindsay H. (Intro to Backpacking 2021)
My favorite part was meeting meeting all of the incredible and inspirational women! I left this trip with so many new connections. I recommend She Moves Mountains to all my friends!
The connections made and experience as a whole was incredible, I am saving for my next trip with this organization as we speak. I am hoping to go to Everest next!
